pls advise - builder use chipboard as bath panel

Hi, I asked the builder to tile the bath panel. He got a rough chipboard and will use that as the bath panel for tiling - is this the right material to use or should it be a wooden panel? Please advise asap as the tiler will tile that tomorrow. Many thanks

Chipboard is not a suitable tiling substrate

Should be a cement board like Hardibacker, Wedi bath board or 12mm plywood

    Agreed.

Chipboard easily swells and moves in a damp environment too.

and then your tiles loosen over time with the movement and look like
crap or at worst, fall off.

Show your builder the door asap
  • Spoke to the builder and told him to change material. He will use 12mm plywood. I suppose this is ok, right? Thanks for all your advice!
  • "right?"

Perfect! It would be a good idea to keep a few spare tiles for the future ;)

We always stick a few spare tiles under the bath for when things do go wrong

make sure he uses marine ply this is water proof and will last, though costs a bit more

Surely an unnecessary extra unless of course you fit porous tiles and grout?

Grout and tiles are not permeable so water will never reach the playwood

damp will penetrate everywhere in a bathroom the front of the panel maybe sealed but condensation will happen inside the bath panel causing swelling and splitting of the ply wood in turn pushing off the tiles
