Lloyds TSB - Debit Card problem

Hello - This is my first post:j

I was wondering if this has happended to anyone else. When I have used my debit card to purchase something on more than one occassion the amount that has been taken off immediately has been taken twice e.g. I paid for something online for £100.00 on Monday and upon checking my available balance it looks like £200.00 has been taken off. However, by tomorrow or the next day the correct amount will show and that £100.00 extra will be back on my balance. Basically what I'm saying is it's as though the bank take double off the balance and put it back a few days later. It hasn't caused any problem so far but if I need my £100 just now I couldn't get it. Hope this makes sense.

Has anyone else had this? I'll give them a phone but just wondering if anyone else expreeinced this and why this happened.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm sure you'll keep me right. I also don't know if it's been asked before. I wasn't sure what to search under.

Blah blah blah!

**this should be in current account forum eh?**
I always do the wrong thing.

  • Never had that experience with my Lloyds Debit Card. Wouldnt be too impressed either if it did happen to me.
What if you have DD's running off the day that they have 'magically taken' your funds?

I am sure there must be something wrong! Good luck! ;)

Someone posted this same thing maybe a month back, sorry don't know the name of the thread or which forum it was on. Not sure which bank that was, but don't suppose it matters. Anyway the upshot was that the banks first test to see if you have £100 in your account for the purchase by taking it out, then when that is fine, they take another £100 for the actual purchase, then put the first hundred back. Don't understand it myself. Sorry, it's vague, but as I remember nothing to worry about unless you don't have the excess funds in the first place.
    more dollar$ than sense
  • I believe that this is what happens:

At the time you make the purchase they "reserve" the amount. This amount will then be shown as taken away from your available balance.

At some point later - may be the same day or some time later, they submit the payment requests in a batch. At this point the money is actually taken.

The reservation should not actually be taken from your account, it should just ring-fence this amount to stop you spending it elsewhere before payment is taken. If things work smoothly, the reservation should dissapear once payment has been taken. However, in your case it seems that it is taking a bit longer to do this. This should not be a problem unless you actually want to spend this money. Then it is an issue.

I would contact your bank about this. If they do not give you a satisfactory answer, then maybe it is time to consider changing banks.
