Need a new boiler (cheap)

My boiler seems to have stopped working, I've called around the repairman from British Gas, he said to replace it would cost about £3,600. I've looked online and the prices for boilers seem far lower then that. Is there that large a difference in efficiency? Is it all in the cost of labour?

What's the cheapest way to go about this. Taking into account that the different efficiencies in the boilers would lead to different yearly costs in bills?

That's because you got a quote from the most expensive installer. Get a quote on a decent boiler from a local independent GSR installer and it will probably be at least £1,000 less. Efficiency doesn't have anything to do with it, all modern condensing boilers are efficient.
What boiler did BG quote you for?

combis cost from 500 quid for a cheapy and even a really good make will cost less than 1000 quid. worcester or vaillant.
if you shop around you can get one supply and fit, for 1500 quid ish.

    Thanks for the replies.

macman: Someone else in my family got the quote so I'm not sure about which model it is but I do know the repairman suggested a combi boiler, which is what we have now I believe. Why is there such a large price difference between boilers?

ormus: But that's the boiler on its own right? What would other costs like labour be?

Also, what were your costs (complete, including labour) for a new boiler? And could you name some companies you've used? I assumed British Gas would charge alot, but I'm always worried we might get a cowboy if we just pick someone from the yellow pages.

    Thanks again.

Good evening: cost will be dependent on your location in the UK, the standard of the specification and site requirements. Try to get a recommendation from a source you trust i.e. friends, colleagues etc...alternatively, try the CIPHE for a RGI near you. Always confirm your chosen installer's gas registration on the GSR website. Further advice is available from the HHIC.

You will find boilers for reasonable prices here.

Then all you do is hire someone locally to fit it for you.

Don't forget to check if you qualify for Warm Front-if you're in receipt of some benefits or tax credits you can get help with the cost of the boiler.

Are we talking of a combi or standard boiler?

I understand that the Warm Front condition for a free fitted boiler and other heating related replacements eg thermostats is that you earn less than £16,000.

I had a new boiler in October - cost £375 for Gloworm boiler, and with fitting and vat came to just under £700. Ok could have done without the expense but was a lot less than initially anticipated, even though my 'expired' bolier was only few years old I have noticed a difference in efficiency, really pleased with it. Was told the old one really was a cheapie and was lucky I had managed to keep it going as long as I did.

    Thanks again.

    read my last post again.
beware if buying your own boiler first and finding a plumber after. some plumbers will refuse to fit makes of certain boilers.
buying a worcester or vaillant should generally be ok.
    Get some gorm.
