    I wonder if the loan was with log book loans or a simular company.
    There are numerous threads and websites accross the net that talk about these companies and very often they did not bother to register the documents correctly. But they may well have threatened to current owner with repossesion (very often illegally), with big blokes on the doorstep to make her pay up.

    Do as the other poster said write back and tell them you had no idea about the finance and that it was a private sale bought and sold in good faith.

    Remember anyone can pay a solicitor £30 to send a threatening sounding letter out, it doesn't mean they will go to court (or that the solicitor will even tell them this is a good idea).
    Hold the proof of the HPI check (hopefully you have something) in reserve for now as it is good supporting eveidence for a judge (should it get that far) that you did not know about outstanding finance and indeed had taken steps to check.
