Is this laptop worth the price?

Have a look at the Dell Outlet site. If you're not concerned that the case might have a small scratch they offer some very good spec laptops for nearly 1/2 the price you'd normally pay.

e.g. Inspiron 1370. Windows 7, Intel Dual Core 1300 chip, 320gb harddrive, 4gb ram, WiFi, Bluetooth 350GBP + Vat and delivery.

Even better deals on Inspiron 1545 models. Intel Dual core 2200 , 2gb ram , 320gb harddrive from 245GBP + VAT & delivery.

Good hunting, hope you get the laptop you're looking for.

This sounds very interesting, thank you. I care not at all if the case is scratched (as long as someone can assure me that the insides will be okay! Presume Dell tell you whether there is cosmetic damage or something more sinister?).

How do I find the Dell Outlet site, other than by the power of Google? Is it an eBay site?

    Cheers for the suggestion.

If I do find a decent Dell, do people generally rate them? My OH bought himself a Dell Inspiron a couple of years back, and admittedly he isn't as careful as I am, but it's been playing up in an annoying but non-fatal way for about the last year. I thought I'd heard on the grapevine that Dells are actually a bit mass-produced ticky-tacky? If not, that's great news, as I do love a bargain!

Sorry, but 2.72kg is anything but light - think nearly 3 bags of sugar

Good point - I'd love a MacBook Air, but I've heard that they are 'light' on power as well?!
Maybe I just need to get stronger arms...;)

The MacBook Air is a truly beautiful device but it should be regarded as an adjunct to, rather than as substitute for, a full-blooded laptop.

In essence, it's an exquisite 13" netbook with a backlit keyboard – albeit with a sealed-in battery, no expansion slot and no facility to upgrade its RAM.

    That's okay - I'm non-dom in Narnia, for tax purposes... :D

To achieve the tax benefits, you need to be dom, not non-dom, there.

But perhaps you are just visiting your mother, flossie_splodge, there? I've always assumed that that's where she lives. :D

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

I had heard something along those lines - it does look to be truly gorgeous though...

No, no, she lives in Wonderland. There is a reciprocal agreement which allows free travel between the two with no restrictions. As long as you have a biometric Narnian passport, of course.

Ah. That explains much. Silly me; I misread her dialect. ;)

I heard she'd been poorly with a virulent strain of Windows XP, recently. I hope she's much better now. Do give her my best wishes; she was always so kindly concerned about my own health. :rotfl:

As for a laptop, I'd like to be able to commend Apple's 15.4" MacBook Pro to you for your consideration but Apple went mad a couple of years ago and replaced its ExpressCard port with an SD slot - so that one has to stay off the wish list until they get their senses back and restore it (even if you can live with a sealed-in battery).

Whatever you decide to buy, it would be wise to purchase it before the General Election, back in Brown-Broken-Britain, not least because there's every possibility the VAT rate will increase to 22.5%.

(On the other hand, of course, you may win out on the exchange rate with the Narnian Zurd if a hung Parliament causes the £ to take another dive against credible currencies. Too many Brits thought their credit cards were issued by the Bank of Wonderland and that the prevailing value of their houses on the other side of the Looking Glass was actually real.)

    >have a new job starting, and the old one is a little slow and creaky now.

Why not let your employer provide you with the tools to do your job.

A Mac may not run any specialist software in your line of work.

As I don't know your line of work, how can we advise on screen size or min. spec.

Your existing laptop may just require a fan cleaning and OS refresh.

Because that's not an option. She will be doing post doctoral research and has to provide her own equipment.

She is an Egyptologist and has to manipulate graphics such as very old manuscripts and of course hieroglyphs.

How do you clean a fan?
I have the laptop in question at the moment as there was a problem - no I wasn't able to sort it myself but I knew a man who could;)
So if a fan clean is straightforward I'll give it a go.
    Any info welcomed and thanks.
