I've been reading "Your Money or Your Life" (the Joe Dominquez one, not Alvin Hall). It's over 15 years old, obviously American, a little bit patronising and has so far taught me that I have a "net worth" of -£18,000 and a "real hourly wage" of about £4.

So, yes, anything vaguely motivational would be nice.
  • Been thinking abut this one & think it would be great - esp with the news this week that bankrupsy up by 50%...so here are a few ideas...
    1) Definately the steps of debt - why you got there, how to change it, realisingthat ANYONE, regardless of status, can get into debt, how society encourages debt...lightbulb/rockbottom, panic (usually with lots of tears), sorting, huge enthusiasm, routine, fed up with routine & fall off the wagon, realise that on the wagon better than off so start agaon & a cycle between the 2...
    2) Where you can get support (sites, advice)
    3) Maximising income & possible pitfalls (ie in my job I had to get permission for a second job)
    4) Implications of decisions - ie consolidation, DMP, bankrup...
    5) How people survived
    6) How to make becoming debt free fun (freebies, pigsback, quidco, saving money the DFW way, becoming DFW - supporting each other, setting small, realistic & achievable goals)
Thinks thats it for now - hope it helps!

Considering all the recent threads about christmas maybe there should be a chapter about how to celebrate birthdays and so on whilst still fighting the debt war.

Definitely has to have many inspirational stories i know they have kept me going when i get down.

    Reducing outgoings whilst increasing incomings.

Maybe something about debt as a single person and debt as a parent as the two have some issues which are different and therefore affect your DF journey.

Loving the idea of this book.

Uh oh! Stand back! Another southernscouser brainwave is about to fill your screens! :p :rotfl:

OK, how about a chapter on the education of money, or the lack of it? Be it in schools, college, uni everyday working life?

If you ever did PSE/Personal Eductaion or whatever it was called must surely remember how crap it was! The only money thing we learnt was how to write out a cheque.

Most of my classmates probably knew how to forge a cheque by then! :rotfl:

And nowadays they probably show you how to fill out a credit card application form. :wall:
  • being a relative newbie i can only speak about what has inspired me - give examples :j i had heard of a slow cooker but reading the threads on what i could cook inspired me:beer: - the humour in the mini challenges we set ourselves and each other have made me into a saver not a spender :money: the blips of others as well as the successes remind me that im human and we all have highs and lows :A

Not sure if it comes under the lightbulb moment bit but what about making sure you get all of the facts and figures and not just guessing at ammounts owed.

Also how not to let minor failings make you fall off the wagon, sometimes we might lose the battle (with ourselves) but we can still win the war!!
  • it's a very good idea; what about including a chapter on health i.e. when to seek help - symptoms of stress and depression, where to seek help giving up smoking - nhs quit smoking helpline, prepayment certificate for prescriptions/cheaper lenses/hayfever tablets as covered in the original moneydiet book
