they only count it if you ask them to, otherwise they'll just weigh it (yes, I kid you not, they weigh banknotes)0

The limit is in place for security and fraud etc so there is no point in having it if if everyone knows it.
For example if the limit was £10.00 and you were going to commit a fraud on someones account you would withdraw £9.99 with no problems so you would bypass security measures.
It's not often people would need that much cash in an instant.0 -
The cashier was possibly scared you was gonna pull a gun out on him or her.
Id possibly call up the branch and ask the question.
If someone asked me what the maximum withdrawl was over the counter id possibly !!!! it aswell lol
lol made me crack upHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
There is also fraud reasons. I'll explain. Initially when CHIP and PIN came in there was a limit as to how much you could take out as just a customer, ie £1000.00 so there was a number of frauds where the person took out £900.00 with just a signature.
When I worked for the bank I advised that any large amounts they should bring in photographic ID. The limit can vary between £3000 and £5000 just using your card with chip and pin. Without the pin then bring as much info as possible if it is for a large amount.
Apologies for the boring answer0 -

With Abbey, it is impossible to avoid disappointment. :mad:0 -
The truth is that you can have whatever the branch has as long as you can prove your identity.
Clearly for significant sums the cash will have to be ordered in.
We had a cash withdrawal made for half a million made last year.0
