Compaq Presario F700 Having trouble turning on and keeping it on

I have a Compaq Presario F700 . After you press the power button, the power light comes on for a couple of seconds and then the laptop turns off. The blue light on the side where the power cable plugs into the laptop is still on so the power supply is providing power. If the battery is taken out and the power button is pressed, the same thing happens. Any ideas?
