Where are the door and window situated? Im thinking probably a new single bed with pull out storage drawers. Perhaps draw up a floor plan of the room and experiment with where the furniture would work. Ikea have some fab storage solutions - a clothes rail is probably making the room look even smaller so some sort of single wardrobe would be better so mess can be hidden away.

Built in floor to ceiling units/shelves/wardrobe down one wall? High gloss doors etc and then match the side of the bed perhaps so it all matches?

Incorporate the bed so the units perhaps sit alongside and over the bottom of the bed where he doesn't need to manouvre. Shelving space for his TV within it etc - really think about what he has and the type of storage needed - drawers underneath or an actual space underneath for longer term storage. Boxes or baskets instead of drawers but built to fit inside a shelf perfectly... high up shelves on the walls not already used.

My son has a double bed but it is built into a large alcove. It has a studwork frame, an mdf platform and an Ikea matress over the top. You can lift up part of the mdf underneath for long term storage - it's huge! The headboard and foot are made with high gloss panels from a Howden's kitchen range :)

I was considering bringing the head of the bed forward of the wall and building above it so that we could put shelves etc above it but he actually has loads of room in the rest of the room - the bed is to make the most of an awkward L-shaped room.

It doesn't have to be all that expensive- labour would cost a bit but the elements using framework rather than actual built in wardrobes and then shiny kitchen doors etc from a trade outlet could work out really economically... You could even perhaps swing it so that the mattress is actually a small double which gives him more space to sleep and laze. You have to use every inch of space available- don't lose any of it at all, consider walls as well as floor!

Ikea isd a good source of inspiration - sometimes you can find things there that you didn't know you were looking for.

I'd love to get hold of a room like that :)

Definitely draw the room and existing/theoretical furniture on squared paper, so that you can shuffle things around.

DS and I were struggling to come up with an elegant solution to the life/sleep/homework/PS3 conundrum based on measurements alone, but when we cut out the shapes it became obvious at once...

The thing that was most important to our teens was a double bed.... so one solution I saw was to take a double loft bed (ikea do a reasonably cheap wood one) and then put all of the storage/desk etc under it.

If you have low ceilings then think about cutting the legs off at 2/3rds (so he can still sit up in bed without banging his head) and then using under it for storage. If they have a double bed then they sprawl on it instead of needing to sit anywhere.

Put his TV/PS3 (or whatever they are called) on wall brackets, put up plenty of shelves for everything else.

Teenagers seem to keep all of their clothes on the floor anyway - even when they do have storage space :-)
