Urgent Advice needed Re a Car
Options
We recently (5 Months) bought a Renault Espace. Last week at its MOT we were told that the car requires "extra load" tyres and that our front tyres are not extra load. We checked with Ebleys/Eurocar and Renault and all said the car should have extra load tyres. We went back to the comapany that sold us the car and asked them to replace the tyres at their cost. They have offered to pay 50% as a goodwill gesture but said in order to pay for the 2nd tyre they need to have in writing that it is dangerous for us not to have them and that it's not just a recommendation. So my question is, is it dangerous for us not to have them. Would our insurance be valid if we don't? We are really stressed about this as we are going on a long journey on Saturday. Does the sale of goods act help us here? Should I contact trading standards? Before it was sold to us it had a "Peace of mind" RAC check. I now do not have peace of mind. Both sets of brake pads have had to be replaced already but that is another matter.
Anyone know what is the right thing to do?

If the Garage you bought your car from have already offered you 50% off It would suggest that they should have changed them in the 1st place so i would phone them again and say ive been advised by an RAC Mechanic to contact Trading Standards -And you would just like to let them no thats what you are going to do-If there in the wrong for selling you the car with out them they will replace tyres for free Good Luck0

HI cotsvale - suggest you ring your local Renault dealer and confirm this then ask them to let you have it in writing for the company that originally sold you the car0

Dont know whether this would help you, but DH bought me a Renault Scenic at the end of June (needed the 3 seats), it was bought from Autotrader, from an advert registered as Trade. However, when he got it home the tyres were all illegal (DH would not even qualify as a "tyre kicker" his car knowledge dosent extend that far ;0)!) and I was lets say disappointed. He bought it on his own (my bro would normally go with him who is a mechanic by trade) but thought as it was trade he would be ok.
Anyway, we decided to get it valetted and get the tyres replaced on the following Tuesday. When the valetter arrived the car wouldnt start, (seller had put on a new battery) and we were puzzled, so my bro came at the weekend to have a quick look at it. Turned out that the car had numerous probs amounting to over £1000 to put right. Bro told us that the car shouldnt have been sold as it was "unroadworthy". DH contact seller who immediately offered to refund £200!!! - DH said that the cost was over £1000, which he replied was "main dealer charges" and if we took it to "Joe Bloggs" garage it would be cheaper (thus suggesting he knew).
We went to trading standards would said that so long as we could prove he was a trader then we would be able to get our money back as Car Traders are not allowed to sell an unroadworthy car.
We did some digging, got autotrader to send us a copy of the ad and state he was registered as trade, and sent him a letter, NOTICE OF INTENDED PROSECUTION, giving him 14 days to refund. He did!!!!
Anyway my point being, perhaps you have a similar case?
PS. The car we returned is now back on Autotrader at the same price, SO BEWARE it is unlikely that this man has repaired it.0 -
Speak to Renault to see what tyres should be fitted. I have a people carrier that has 15" wheels and doesn't need re-inforced tyres, if I had the optional 16" wheels then I would need re-inforced tyres.0
