Removal Quotes and Storage

We are considering moving in with relatives soon as our flat hasn't sold yet and we're getting to the point we won't be able to afford our rental house (had to move due to ill health)
Anyway we have had one quote from a removal company
It's a 3 bed house with not many white goods.
£376 packing
£564 removal
and £47 a week storage costs.
Storage unit is 17 miles away as this is a local firm.
Can't do self storage as we have large furniture and hubby can't move it himself plus he is doing all he can to secure work being self employed and I am too ill to be able to pack everything up again.
What have other people paid? Is this about average?
We are going to get another local firm in this one being 5 miles away and another one from a bigger place don't know who yet but thinking of avoiding Pickfords...
Just need an idea of average costs....

It does not sound that cheap.
You will probably find the quotes from bigger companies eg Pickfords are more expensive and Pickfords are generally not very good.
You could try looking for reputable local firms using this website http://www.bar.co.uk/ or this one http://www.ngrs.co.uk/
There is more competition in London and the quotes for your type of home assuming you have no unusual items would be nearer £250, £350 and £25 respectively.
A move into storage is generally cheaper than a move from house to house as the unload for a storage is easier and they also know they have nice storage charges and another move when you want the items out of storage.
Times are hard for removal companies as there is little work around, try a few small local companies and don't be afraid to negotiate hard as they should be happy to get some work. (I would not be surprised if the quote you already have would reduce by 25% to 30% if you spoke to them in the right way).
Becarefull when getting quotes as some will quote you a certain amount and then you will find they have budgeted for say 5 hours and any time over this is charged at say £90 an hour. So try and make sure they quote you for the entire job.
You might find it cheaper to buy the packing materials yourself, don't be tempted to scrimp though. This company supply very high quality boxes at very good prices (They are used by most of the trade in London).

Thanks, it's going to be a 2 day job according to this company as it's difficult to get a lorry outside the house (narrow windy road through a village)
I didn't think it that cheap but we've got 2 more coming next week, one from 5 miles away (the only one local) and one from 17 miles away....
Can't believe that packing and removal is £325 in London... I used to live in Surrey and all the removal costs were high...0 -
NEH you may have already looked at this and ruled this out, but is there someone you know with a large garage who could store some/all of your stuff for free/less to help with the costs?

Actually there is plenty of work around .Any reputable removal company will not reduce their fee by 25-30% ,we would be running at a loss !!.Remember you get what you pay for,pay peanuts you get monkeysVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

We don't know anyone living close by and my hubby can't manage to lift all the furniture himself, plus with my health being the way it is i couldn't manage all the packing this time round.
I don't really want to risk all our furniture in a garage either in case of damp issues....0 -
Well, for reference I paid £670 for removals and £260 for packing. It took 2 people a day packing, and 3 people a day doing the removals in 2 lorries. This was to move about 30 miles in the Southeast.
The £260 for packing was definitely worth it... saved a lot of stress! For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -

.
It sounds reasonable to me - we paid just over £1000 in total last month for a 2 day removal from a 3 bed house to a 4 bed a mile away with all packing (including wrapping individually some valuable books) included. There were some access problems so they could only get a small lorry down the road - had to do 3 return trips with it! They also unplumbed (deplumbed?) the washing machine and plumbed it in at the other end.
The packing was definitely worth it - it took three men about six hours to pack up all our stuff, I'm not sure where we would have found that time from to do it ourselves, plus they did it a lot better than we could have! We had to pay a box deposit, which was returned as soon as they'd collected the empty boxes from us.
I had some things in storage up north (Lincolnshire) that then came out of storage the following week - I was paying £8 a week per pallet - two pallets in total (basically the contents of a 1 bed flat), it worked out at around £80 a month.0
