How to have an green/ethical baby?

  • Oh, and with the mentions of surestart, see if you're entitled to a surestart grant. I was told I'd missed out for it as I left it too late to apply for it after the girls were born, and I appealed. With the appeal I was told I had no chance, but I got the money in the end up. I think it was cause it was the end of the year and they'd lose the money if I didn't get it, so it's worth finding out rather than losing out. I got £1000.

We never heat up bottles, we just use room temperature water to make them up which makes things so much easier especially during the night and whilst out and about.

    What a great thread.

When I was pregnant with my first child we just said to anyone who asked what to get for the baby for money to be put into an account so that we could buy the washable nappys. These nappy's are now on my second child and will do my third if I ever manage to get pregnant again.

A good place to start with finding the right nappy is

Someone was asking a little while back about non disposable wipes. I just went into Wilkinsons and bought tons of flannels. Use ful for faces as well especially as they get older and try to feed themselves :rotfl:

Some one also said about the chamomile mix. I put mine in a spray bottle which makes it easier for transportation when out and about. I also use the flannels when out as well.

I make up my own baby wipe mix using distilled water, witch hazel, olive oil, tea tree and chamomile essential oil. I too put mine in a bottle which you can dispense from easily (not a spray one but one with the bit that flips up out of the lid). I have about 20 wipes that I wash with the nappies.

Yes you should call the council , or ask your midwife/GP it doesn't operate in all areas, it's supposedly only 'deprived' areas, but my friend lives In westminster and they have it.

  • Originally SureStart was started in areas with a lack of provision of things like childcare (which would generally be deprived areas) but they are trying to expand them now to cover everywhere apparently.
  • How about not using nappies at all, but using EC (elimination communication) their are a few websites about on it.
Never managed to try it myself though.
personaly I breasfeed and use terries nappies, also cheap flannels as washable babywipes. Made all my own baby food, bought everything 2nd hand exc carseat.
I would also say use a sling, they are so easy to use and compfy too, my youngest lived on me in his sling until he was 6 months and we still use it now occasionallyeven though he weighs over 35 lb
I bought my slings from https://www.brightsparkslings.co.uk
they're all fab especially the corries

EC is impossible in the western world. There is no way you can focus so much attention on your baby for it to be succesful, and why on earth would you want to.

I am a huge fan of slings though, they are invaluable and can rule out the need for a pushchair for the first few months.
