but they would have to prove that there health and safety would be at risk to be entitled to the crisis loan for rent in advance, it would be very extreme circumstances.

Not quite accurate. In most circumstances the person must require the award because it is the only means of preventing serious damage or serious risk to the health or safety of a person or their family to qualify for a Crisis Loan. Not for rent in advance. For rent in advance to be paid via a crisis loan, the person must have received a community care grant on leaving care and have an immediate need for rent in advance. This is outlined in the DWP's technical guidance on Crisis Loans which can be viewed here

the exact wording taken from that text:
You do not have to be getting any kind of benefit or entitlement in order to apply for a Crisis Loan, but you must be aged 16 or over to get one. The conditions for a Crisis Loan are strict. By law, an award of a Crisis Loan must be to help meet expenses in an emergency or because of a disaster. And must be the only way of preventing serious damage or serious risk to the health or safety of a person or their family. For every application, we will look at all the circumstances and decide whether those conditions are met.
The only time we do not apply those conditions is when an applicant gets a community care grant on leaving care and has an immediate need for rent in advance.

(my bolds). It isn't specified in the OP whether he is leaving care. If he isn't then a Crisis Loan is not an option for rent in advance. For others who come across this thread in the furture or for the OP if it does apply to him, the info could be helpful to know this.

Thank you all for your information, i went to view the property and the landlord made it clear that he wanted a months rent and £360 deposit, his secretary totally got it mixed up on the phone beforehand. im going to the job centre tomorrow to see about borrowing a deposit etc. thanks again for taking time to help me out, it is much appreciated. regards Kev :)
  • Rent in advance is paid on crisis loans if there is a risk of homelessness without a loan being paid or if the customer is currently homeless.

This satisfies the immediate risk to health and safety criteria.

The rent in advance has to be paid to secure fresh accomodation only - it won't be paid if you are already resident in the property.

Deposits/bonds are specifically excluded from crisis loans.

I would put the postcode here first to see of the actual rent will be covered in full first?

Thanks again folks, Dreamy the situation is that my mum is on the verge of having a major breakdown because of my moodswings and stupid state, i also have had enough of her as she is not helping matters with my mental state, the flat i have been to view yesterday with my sister, will be gone by next monday if i dont sort the deposit out asap, my sister is gonna borrow me the 1st months rent which is £360 so i can pay him it up front, basically that is where i am upto so far until i get in touch with the job centre later for help with the deposit. My local rent help is anythin upto £390 pcm so i am inside the budget when it comes to that, do you think i will be in with any luck of securing this property by the weekend with my current circumstances? cheers kev

Its not the job center who deal with the deposit its the council. And chances are you will need to make an appointment not just show up. Then it takes time for all the forms etc. So I wouldnt bank on it all happeneing today!

Hi following on from my other thread, i have just recieved my crisis loan form as i am looking for £360 for my flat deposit as i am on Long term incapacity and my mum wants me out of the house by the end of next week, will the crisis loan be sorted by next Friday if i post it for Monday mornings post and will they borrow me the £360 that i am asking for for the flat that i have been to view or should i ask for more as people say you dont get what you ask for? im in a pretty desperate situation, also do you think if i get in touch with the landlord of the flat asking him to give me a few days to sort the Deposit and Housing benefit out, he will be ok about it? i do have £360 that my sister borrowed me for the first months rent, would this come in useful in securing me the flat before someone else snaps it up? also is a crisis loan the corect loan that i am looking for in this desperate situation? thanks for anymore advice. Kev

do you have a defined medical condition? Or are your moodswings due to something else?
