Settling a final bill

Options
Does anybody know if there's a law that exists that states a consumer has a certain period of time over which a final bill can be paid (e.g 3 months or something)?

Depends what was agreed in the contract. If that stated payment in 30 days, then no other law exists which will allow you to extend that to 90 days.
If you put it into context (bill from who, for what?) then you might get a more meaningful response.
If its a quarterly gas or electricity bill, it will be due from the date of issue, as it covers your last 3 months of consumption.

Usually, if you have a final bill you cannot settle, most suppliers will let you have an instalment plan if you make a payment. For instance £200 final bill, £50 payment then 3 further payments of £50 each. :)

They dont have to offer this.

Before you switch supplier you need to ensure you are in a position to pay the final bill within 28 days of receipt.

I agree they don't have to, but most will if you approach respectfully depending on your past payment history.

You have 14 days to settle the bill (As with all 1/4 bills, unless on a payment plan)

However, most suppliers are flexible with this as they understand you will also be paying your new supplier as well.

For instance, EDF Energy will give you up to 6 months to pay a final bill.

Read your meter regularly and pay by Direct Debit, I am in the process of switching and my final bill is hopefully going to be a modest refund.
