Can anyone advise on this please.
A couple of months I rang an engineering firm to come and look at a job at my house, which they did and sent a report, they now wnat paying for this, although I wanted a quote and the work is now not going ahead. i have told them this but they say they will take it to court if I do not pay. Can they do this?
It was all short notice as I was going on holiday and they didn't have time to send me they're contract or fee details before they came round, if I had known they would charge I would never have asked them to come.

Why would you expect this for free if it was never mentioned? If I asked for a professional report I would expect to be charged for it.
If I then asked for works to be completed I would ask for a discount of the report cost from any price, but I would still expect to have to pay for the works.
Although you have decided not to go ahead with this firm, they have provided a service to you and now want paid for that service. You need to take a step back and look through the trees to the wood, they should be paid (unless of course they initially told you the report was free?).0
