Yikes, now that the sun has hit my kitchen/dining windows the smell is unbearable:D...I repotted all my seedling plants last night,tomatoes/peppers and cucmbers,I opened an Arthur J Bowers growbag and used the contents to fill my plantpots, but now my house stinks..so they MUST go out into my little plastic greenhouse,I will try and keep the little peppers indoors are they are only 2 seedling leaves each, but the bigger pots will have to go out, will bubble wrap increase the chances of their survival at night,or some poundland fleece?..Forecast for Scotland is rain/snow/sleet,come Sunday too.But i honestly cant stand the pong.

You'll have to do all you can to keep them warm. Bubble wrap etc. will help but to be honest I don't fancy their chances in a plastic greenhouse. Tomato plants especially need to be kept warm. Even if they survive their cropping potential is affected if they dip below 10C.
Do they really smell that bad? I think tomato plants smell quite nice. Has something gone rotten maybe?0 -
what do they smell of?
something isnt right if they smell that bad
i would be wary of putting them outside just now0 -
Hi,
I've just used a couple of bags of their multipurpose compost and it was the same, smelled really awful. After a couple of days the smell did go though. Still wouldn't use it again as it was really twiggy, even found a bit of wood about 3 inches square.
I'm in central Scotland and I had some of my baby plugs in my plastic greenhouse, which are now in my garage and they have been fine. (Plastic greenhouse tried to blow away in a gale .)
Might be enough to give the compost a bit of air, sit them outside for a while and if necessary bring them in at night when the weather is really bad? Mummy to an amazing little girl

Thanks guys, its not the plants that smell, its the compost(As Garnet lady has discovered too),it realy does smell bad..I live 5min drive from the country and have fields accross the road,so im used to country/manure smells...but this compost just is minging.:D
Ive another growbag of the same stuff outdoors, and in future il keep it for outdoor use only.
will just have to try my best to keep the little plants cosy.
il try the tip of keeping them outdoors for a couple of days firts and just bring them in at night, see if the pong dies down.;)Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

cooking mama it might be safer to put them out in the day and bring them in at night if its going to be frosty....I am in the west but have a greenhouse so i have been doing this with very tender seedlings like peppers which will never be outside proper leeks, lettuce etc are in the greenhouse all the time now.....The weather up here has been pretty good during the day for the last week 10days but we did have snow not long before that so be prepared to be down the local garden centre replacing with plug plants or another load of sowing!Every Penny's a prisoner :T0

How are the plants and the smell?

I used the last of the compost yesterday thank goodness, horrible stuff. I had a little pot next to me with the bits of wood and big lumps of matted roots I was pulling out of it. Mummy to an amazing little girl

Perhaps put them out in the GH but add a bit of protection at nights?
We are a bit further south -lancashire, so less chance of late frosts now, so most of mine our out in the GH, but I am standing by with old net curtains/fleece if a frost is threatened.
Mind you we have a full sized (unheated) GH and the seedlings are at the far end away from the door.
I have kept in my aubergine seedlings and a couple of toms and chillis inside as backups just in case, but needed the room.
We are using the same make of compost (seems to be on offer everywhere), but haven't noticed a bad smell? Perhaps I was lucky lol.

BTW wonder if it matters that I keep the compost outside in the garage so it is kept cold but dry?"Overthinking every little thing

Ah well GL looks like I was lucky with my batch then.
Have another bag not yet opened, so will save that for my outdoor pots just in case.
