Painting Fire Surround .... Gas Fire

Hi there, just wondered if anyone had any advice they could share.
We are currently buying a house with a "Mahogany" Style Fire Surround which surrounds a gas fire.
Instead of buying new furniture that compliments the fire I wondered ....
Is there anyway we could paint the surround - would we need specialist paint ??
or
Would it be easier just to buy another surround ?
Thanks

Me and my brother have both done our fire surrounds with the same paint. It was specialized stone flek from places like B&Q. Mine was a mahogany finish with some scrolls on, I scraped the scrolls off, rubbed the surround down to give a key, sprayed it with primer, then a few coats of stone flek (available in different colours), then you use a sealer to finish off. It looks totally different a lot more modern.
My brother's gas fire was also brass finish surround and front so he sprayed them matt black. For the price of a few tins of spray paint the fire surrounds were completely transformed.
