... DVardys, that was my only reason for getting the credit cards, just to show that I can manage them well, which I do. Do you mean something like a store card?
No. Some product with a likely lender. The idea is to build up reputation with a likely lender or 2 directly. Store cards only build up reputation indirectly through your credit score - which is what I am suggesting you shortcircuit.

I'm sorry I have no idea what 'some product with a likely lender' is?

Get a bank account with someone you want to get a mortgage with potentially in the future. Get a savings account. Get their credit card.
Show them a history of earning, saving and spending sensibly.

it's what people used to have to do not so many years ago.

Fair enough, but this was in May 2009 (offer came through early June) when lending was at its lowest.

You can have a proxy vote, in any case the point of being on the electoral roll is to demonstrate stability to a lender so you don't actually have to vote if you choose not to. As far as mobile phone contracts are concerned, there are cheap as chips contracts at £5 a month if you hunt around.

I'm not on the roll and I won't get on in it if it requires paying council tax. And I'm definitely not getting a monthly phone contract as it just doesn't work out well for me. I'll have a look at mortgage quotes, but the BS I'm with at the moment seem to have the lowest calculation per salary, ie only x3.

Without being on the electoral roll you're seriously limiting your chances of getting any mortgage at all, let alone over x3 (!). Might be worth asking on the mortgage board as well, although you will probably get the same comments again ...

Being on the Electoral Roll and paying Council Tax are 2 separate issues.

If you end up paying Council Tax as a result of getting on the Electoral Roll, it can only be because you were evading paying. It is not a voluntary tax.
