No sound from speakers

This is on behalf of a friend. He has a HP desktop running Windows 7, with Realtek sound card.
He has a set of Creative speakers with a green 3.5 jack plugged into the back of the tower. I have plugged my Ipod into the speakers, to establish it's not a problem with these and it works fine.
When I first looked at the computer, even though the speaker icon had a green tick next to it, there was still no sound.
I checked Windows update and an update came through for Realtek audio, so I installed it.
That still hasn't fixed the problem, now the speaker icon has a red cross next to it. And in the control panel it's saying that no speakers are plugged in.
The realtek audio manager in control panel is blank, and says there is no audio device detected.
I have checked the sound card in device manager and it appears to show that the device is working correctly.
Is there something I'm missing, or is there a box that should be ticked somewhere?
Thanks in advance.

I would download the drivers from the soundcard makers site , or use the disc if you have it,then in device manager uninstall the driver and then load driver again. Maybe uninstall the device, soundcard, itself and load device and driver again -windows should find the device on re-start.0
