My desktop PC has basically died - it has a corrupt XP OS, the DVD is faulty (however I think this could just be the wrong drivers installed after an update as my dad has an almost identical problem with his PC), and the hard drive is clicking like mad which I know means its on its way out
I am really strapped for cash and credit isn't an option so I was going to try and repair it myself if that's possible. I paid over £600 for this computer back in June 2006 (on my credit card and I have literally just this month paid it off!) so if I can make it last longer I'd be more than happy
From my limited knowledge, I'm know I need to replace the hard drive with a compatible one - but how I find out which one I need? Is swapping out the hard drive simple (I know I'll need to install an OS on it)? Will there be any way of getting software off my current, damaged, hard drive? I have software on there I've purchased years back and didn't manage to back the installation files up before my computer died. I know better now and will back up more thoroughly (and in two separate places!) when I get sorted out
Or should I just reside myself to living on bread and water for a while and buy a new computer?

Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.
Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!

Does it boot up at all, even to bios? When you say corrupt xp can it get to desktop? My Compaq has a recovery partition so your's may too.0

Open your PC, remove the existing hard drive. Search google to find if it is IDE or SATA Drive. Replace it with a new hard drive along with new DVD ROM as you'll need it to install the Operating System. It should bring your PC to back to life.0
