Domestic Fire Door query. Anyone had one?

Can anyone help clarify this for me please? Its a money saving issue as I dont want to waste money buying the wrong things!
We are having a doorway put in from our kitchen into the garage.
Now Ive had some conflicting advice about this..is a smoke seal and a fire seal one of the same? Is it also called a intumescent strip?
Theres also some confusion about whether the seal has to be on the door or the frame, or both!!
Im lost, but certainly dont want to waste money buying stuff that building control reject, or get a door and frame that are not compatable.
Sensible option would be to confirm with building control I know, not ask here, thing is, ive asked three times now, and each time ive been told something different, so not sure what to do!
First time they simply said a 30 min fire door with a smoke seal,
Second time they said a 30 min fire door with a fire seal on the frame and a self closing mechanism,
Third time im told we need a step down into the garage of at least 10cm (never mentioned before!) def need a seal on the door edges, possibly one on the frame as well, depending on the type of door certificate!! (insert old confused icon here!!!)
Help!

This link might help...
diynot.comyes you will need a fire door (half hour fire resistance with self closer and intuemescent strip)
you will also need to make a building regs application to form the structural opening into the garage.
you'll need a minimum 100mm non-combustible step down into the garage
you should check if the garage floor is lower than your kitchen floor to achieve this step - they may be at the same level if ther was no door in the first place0 -

Hi Thanks for that, its a big help. Perhaps I'll need to check when we get a door if the strip is needed on door and frame. (synical old me thinks that the door shop will say "oh yes, you need this special fire door AND this special extra expensive fire resistant door frame!!")
Checked and we think there will be a step down. Quite a major thing really, as without that we would be looking at changing the floor level, which would make the whole thing totally unfeesible!0 -
its just a question of time. some are rated at 30 minutes, the better ones are rated at 60 minutes.
some insurance companies specify which ones are required. mainly for industry and commerce.
