Long stripe / line in new carpet

Had a new carpet fitted earlier today. Just noticed that there is a stripe running the entire length of the carpet (about a centimetre in width). It looks awful, the carpet was nearly 300 quid.

Could the carpet have been damaged during fitting or storage? Has anyone seen this type of thing before?

Might be a manufacturing defect, realistically the fitter should have noticed. Check its not just the pile being brushed one way, if its not then you'll need to contact whoever you bought it from and they'll probabily come out and inspect it (or get the manufacturer to).

Did you buy and fit from one place or do it separately?

Bought and fitted from same company (a large national chain). Oddly enough we have a corner suite that breaks into 2 sections, the fitter left one half over the stripe and the other half on the other side of the room, almost like they were trying to hide it.

This sounds like a fault in manufacture and should have been spotted by the fitter and brought to your attention. My brother bought a carpet with a fault line in at a greatly reduced price (was going on the stairs, so wasn't noticeable) but the dealer pointed the flaw out before he bought it, hence the reduced price.
I would phone them up and get them to come out and inspect the carpet.

Spoke to the company (who subcontract out to the fitters) and they say it's a pole mark, and that it will come out in a few weeks. Guess we'll have to see what happens. In the meantime I'll be taking photographs of the mark to make sure we have a record. It looks bl**dy awful.

Wouldn't have minded but if the fitter had any sense he'd have fitted it the other way around so that the mark was under the sofa, we'd have never have seen it then.

Pole mark indeed, i think they are pulling your plonker.

Personally i wouldnt wait a few weeks, i would insist that they send someone out to inspect it) Speak to the Manager The longer you leave it the more worry you will cause yourself. Your eyes will go to it everytime you go into the room.
How the hell can someone over the phone say its a pole mark, In the meantime ring trading standards,

I had exactly the same problem and they came out to inspect it, i had a new carpet fitted within i week.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    I agree with McNeff.

I would insist they send someone out to inspect the carpet. You cannot diagnose a fault without seeing it and after a few weeks are they going to say you left it too late?
Also take some pictures and write a letter of complaint.
Take the names of those you speak to and always ask for the manager. If no joy from the store manager go higher.

Thanks for the replies everyone, haven't been on for a while, sorry.

Glad to report that all is sorted, the stripe did indeed fade away. The carpet store apologised and said that the fitter should have explained what it was, it is where the first part of the carpet overlaps itself on the roll, it leaves a dark coloured crease.I've never seen this before but apparently it affects some carpets worse than others.

After a bit of hoovering and letting the carpet settle in I am pleased to say we can't see it any more. :D

Thankyou for all the helpful replies.

having been in the carpet trade for over 25 years as a carpet fitter and a retailer, i can tell you it sounds like a pole line. this is just where the carpet is rolled round a pole, the pile is pushed down and will return in a short time. sometime it's days, but it can take weeks. this is not a fault. if unsure ring a different carpet retailer,
