PRICE PROTECTION 2010 from BG
Options
For all people who were wondering what would happen when the above tariff ends on 30 April 2010 ( including me) a letter will be coming out to advise you will be rolled onto Fixed Price 2012 which is 4% higher than today's standard rate. You can call to say that you do not wish this if you want to choose another tariff. The cancellation charges are £35 each . I have been advised Customers can cancel this within 6 weeks at no extra charge if they decide it is not for them.
British Gas have also brought out new tariffs this week called Websaver 7 and Online Saver 2 so you might want to do some research and check what tariff is best for you.

My email and BG reply on the end of this tariff. I am moving onto Southern Electrics Care Tariff with who I already have my gas account.
Note the new tariff mistake highlighted in red !
"Dear Mr **********
I'm sorry to hear that you have decided to change your supplier.
I have cancelled your Direct Debit payment scheme as you requested and you will receive a letter to confirm this by 22 April 2010.
Your electricity is due to transfer to our new Price Protection March 2010 tariff when your current tariff expires. We will write to you this month with information regarding this, and you will be given advice of how to cancel this new tariff as you are changing supplier.
I will update the notes on your account accordingly. When you have transferred, Southern Electric should ask you to confirm your opening meter reading. This will then be placed in an external database to which all suppliers have access, to allow us to close this account to the same reading that your new account is opened to. When we receive the reading, we will create you a final bill and any remaining credit at this time will be refunded to you automatically.
Thank you for contacting British Gas.
Kind regards

Your enquiry: Hi, My electricity deal ( Price Protection 2010) runs out on the 30th April 2010. I hereby give you notice that I have instructed Southern Electric to take over my account 28 days from today 13/04/2010. I strictly prohibit you from moving my account to a differant tariff after 30/04/2010 and trust that as per industry standards that my present tariff will continue untill Southern Electric take over my supply . My account as of today 13/04/2010 is £93 in credit it will be unessecary for you to take anymore Direct Debits to cover my final bill, I therefore remove my permission for you to DD my Bank Account for any further amounts. I trust that when Southern Electric take over my supply and I supply a final reading for my account with you that any outstanding credit will be repaid to myself within 7 days .
Best regards

This is something I was going to test myself(I am on the same tariff)
Whilst the code of practice certainly states that customers should remain on their present tariff during the changeover period; it doesn't cover our situation where we are on a fixed term tariff that expires on 30th April 2010.
Frankly I cannot see BG keeping us on our fixed rate tariff, for what could be several weeks, after 01 May 2010 and I suspect we will be placed on their Standard tariff pending transfer to another company.
As it is only a Code of Practice, I doubt we will have grounds for formal complaint
P.S.
Personally I wouldn't have cancelled the DD as I suspect they will now remove the DD discount for your final bills.0 -

I take it that the new tariff should read March 2012 but in the second sentence they imply that the 2010 tariff will continue if you are changing supplier .

Yes it is March 2012(and 4% above standard tariff as Joyful states above)
I suspect that is just a BG 'standard letter' plucked from the Computer for someone leaving, and whilst you can clearly cancel the March 2012 tariff, I don't think it implies you will remain on your present tariff(which they say will have expired)
That said, I will be delighted if you are correct!0 -
The meter reading that I give online just before the tariff finishes could possibly be favourable to myself !0

so umm what sort of price increases are we looking at from priceprotection 2010 to BG`s current offering? ie fixed price 2012 or websaver 7.
Am i right in thinking we cant acctualy do anything till 01 may anyway as we tied in till then with penalty charges.
I`ve got online billing anyway so on 1st may i might be clicking to change tariff0 -
Right ive just calculated roughly my usage for the year. When priceprotection 2010 ends.
my bill will increase by £135 a year on websaver 7
£340 a year on Fixed Price 2012....
cant find details on fixed price2012 so ive followed joyfulls figures of standard tariff +4%
Thats a big difference, anyone got a crystal ball and can say if prices r gonna rise0 -
It's Price Protection 2012, not Fixed Price 2012 (that's a completely different, and much more expensive, tariff that was offered ages ago) - make sure if you're using a comparison web site that you put the right one in
The difference between Price Protection 2010 and WebSaver7 is very favourable - better than most were expecting - but I think a lot of people are going to opt out of the Price Protection 2012 and go for WebSaver7 because PP2012 is only for two years. If it was a 4 or 5 year fix like the Price Protection April 2010 was, I think more people would go for it. Meh!0
