Is 25 kWh per day normal in a 2 bed appartment

Options
Hi,

I just moved into a 2 bed appartment.

We are just 2 people working from 9-5.
The appartment has double glazed windows.
We have got 2 laptops,TV,modem boc,fridge/freezer,washing machine,microwave,kettle,electric hob and a water heater.

We never switched on our heatr last month. Still the average daily energy consumption is 20-25 kWh which resulted in a monthly reading of 600 kWh..

What could have used up this much energy? Is the water heater the culprit here. We dont have a timer for water heater. it was switched on 24*7.

    Hi

I live in a large 3 bed semi with gas fired central heating and hot water (incl. shower). Our electricity usage, which includes electric hob and oven, is an average of 9 kWh per day. The only difference between my usage and yours is the water heater...

I would say probably the water heater. My usage for a family of 7 used to be 18 a day and is now between 8 and 13.

  • Sounds like you could do with posting more info about the water heater so someone can recommend a programmer or other suitable fix.
  • I am in the same situation as you, but our daily readings are at 15-20 a day. Heaters off, water boiler on over night, but still high usage.

I'm still trying to uncover what is causing high usage for our apartment, but as soon as I do I shall post the cause.

It's very likely the water being on 24-7. Think of it kind of as a giant kettle...

As said, water heater. If its a rented place and the heater is plugged into the mains in the same fashion as a TV or DVD player just put a £2 timer plug on it and get it to come on for max of 2 hours when you are going to need it, no reason for 2 people who are out all day to need hot water boiling away 24/7 :)

Kettles aren't insulated, water heaters should be.

If the water tank is insulated and the thermostat set correctly then the water heater will not keep consuming electricity continuously. A modern water cylinder loses about 2 or 3KW of heat per day maximum (this is a spec they must meet), so as long as you are not drawing off and using lots of hot water then 2 or 3KW is the most the water heater should add to your daily bill.

Things to check: That the tank is insulated well? That the thermostat on the immersion is not set above about 60C.
