Basically, i knew it was a load of cobblers but i emailed them back pretending to be overjoyed etc to see where the con lay - they wanted me to pay 400 euros into the very safe and well respected weston union money transfer to cover legal costs.

Watch out if you get this.

What do i do about it though? Is it a matter for the police? Would they even be interested?

Moneywise Magazine mentions such things very often. These netherlands based "Lotteries" are common, and effect us all over Europe. You did the right thing to back away now, since 400 euros is often just the starting point.

The police will not be able to do much since I imagine the company is outside any jurisdiction. Once these groups are unmasked, they simply create another company with another name, and continue scamming.

Knowledge is power in this case, but you can send this story to Moneywise Investigates and they might do a feature on it. Well done to warn others.

Its still fascinates me the number of people who actually believe they have won a lottery that they never entered.

What you can do is report this to the ISP who is hosting the site. They should be able to close the site down. I actually subscribe to an organisation called Spam Cop. I then just forward all these scam emails to them, they do a trace of the host sites and try to get them closed down.

Danny Wallace followed this through for his book, "The Yes Man". He went to Amsterdam and was given an address and a name to contact at that address. It turned out that it was a Supermarket.

Some of the scammers are a couple of hundred pounds down because of they have sent those very heavy carvings to the UK. What a shame !
