For clarification, the formulas are correct if the value entered in B1 is not formatted as a percentage, but kept as a whole number.

If you want cell C1 to show you:

How much the discount is: =A1/100*B1

The total price after discount: =A1-(A1/100*B1)

Thanks for that. Just tried it and it asked me if I wanted it fixing and then it added another bracket at the end, like this =a1*(1-b1)) . It seems to work ok though.

Now, taking the same situation, what would I write if I wanted to to add a percentage in B1?

I did as Stompa mentioned, but formatted B1 to be a percentage and the answer came out at £14.00. So it looks right do you think?

Yes, it's correct. If the number is a percentage then it should be formatted as a percentage.

    Excellent. thanks for your help.

I wonder if I could do the following and how it would be written in the total cell

A1 contains units of items, say 10
B1 contains the cost of each unit, say £1.00
C1 contains the discount percentage, say 30%
D1 contains the answer, ie A1 multiplied by B1, then discounted by the amount in C1

    How would that be written?

Thanks, that's great. It wouldn't work, but asked me if I wanted to fix it; said yes and it added brackets, like this =(a1*b1*(1-c1))

Are you sure you're typing these formulae in correctly? They've all been correct and shouldn't need any fixing!
