I have had to do 1,2 and 5 above as well as expenses for my OH who is paid by the NHS computer. It's the humans who make the mistakes and when they do they should own up, apologise and accept responsibility. I think the employer in this case has behave reprehensively and should have already grovelled. Instead they have (as I understand it) given a loan to the taxpayer of £700 and deducted NI of a similar amount and now they want to deduct this over 10 months without discussing how this will affect the taxpayer - total arrogance. The only saving grace is the tax refund which should be used to pay off the loan to the employer. The only thing that is constant is change.0

If they though your wife had a second job it's probably because she didn't hand over a P45 when she started, if she handed over a P46 it could also be the tax office's mistake.
At the end of the day your wife hasn't had to shell out the £750 because her employer has subbed it to her. She is entitled to reach an agreement such as this but many employers would go for the whole £750 straight away.
Plus she has an extra £1,300 coming up, it's someone's error but most people would be pretty please to find out they had an extra £550 coming their way.0 -
If she has worked for them for over 12 months as you say is she on the right tax code for the year before? If not she may be able to claim some of that back too.0

Gosh - it sounds like a nightmare. I can understand people making a mistake but surely someone somewhere would have realised? I'm not sure why people have been so harsh with you. Like someone said - it is your responsibility to check your tax code etc but if you've never had any problems in 20 odd years and don't necceassrily know about tax etc and expect that HMRC gets it right - it's not exactly ridiculous to believe that and I expect that thousands of people in the country either believe that HMRC is always right and knows what's going on or that they just don't understand it.
Hope you can get it sorted soon.
