The way myself and my now ex husband worked it is that he would work during the day, come home and I would go out to work in the evening into the night time four nights a week.

This meant that as the children got older and started nursery and then primary school, I could add extra hours during the day too (when appointments/meetings/therapy allowed).
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Shortly, I'm going to be looking for nights or evening work. (Once baby is 1 next month)

OH works full time, so I can't work in the day as we don't want a childminder/nursery for the baby.

Does that mean that I could possibly claim JSA until I find work??

I didn't think I could, as I thought my OH would have been expected to keep us, so to speak?
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...
  • if your husband earns 28 k then why on earth do you think you are entitled to JSA

you may get contribution based for 6 months but i doubt it, you certainly wont get the other one (income based)

Why would i not be entitled to JSA regardless of what my husband earns???? i understand i need to be available for more work than 6hrs a week but if im willing to work more what the hell has my husbands wage got to do with my entitlement????!!! i have worked since i left university and paid lots of tax into the system so when i need some help i should be able to get it . tinkertinkerbells comments have made me quite cross.

You would be entitled to JSA for the first 6 months if you have made enough contributions and are activly seeking permanent employment. After that savings and partners earnings are taken into account so you wont qualify after that.

There are two forms of JSA, contributions based which if you meet the criteria (sufficient contributions in applicable years) you can receive for 6 months regardless of household income, and income-based which is based on your household income (which you would not qualify for because your husband's income is way over the amount considered necessary for a couple with one child to live on).

Lots would have changed in the interim but 16 years ago I claimed JSA (although it was called something different back then) after eldest son was born...mind you, I had returned to work when he was just a few weeks old and then had to leave 6 months later due to illness.

I made sure I recovered (didn't claim any benefits during that time - not even family credit) and then signed on as I was then completely looking for employment, which I found a very short time later. I do remember though that I had to be available for work in normal hours rather than just evenings and the job I gained was working during the day time which didn't fit in with hubbies work...eldest went into paid for nursery (no childcare rebate back then either through tax credits!).

As I said, this was 16 years ago, hubby was on an extremely low salary (I had previously earnt at least 3 times his earnings) and a lot of rules have changed since then.
