npower price increase for Web 14

Options
npower have just informed me of a price increase on my Web 14 supply. A quick search of their web site suggests that the Sign Online 18 product will be cheaper. Has anybody tried to switch between different products at npower?

Also I have a £100 discount due in a couple of months - it looks like that wouldn't be affected, but I'd be nervous about losing that.

Thanks

  • I worked out it's £30 a month saving for me, and it looks like Sign Online 18 is cheapest amongst all suppliers - so I called them, and they switched me, confirming the discount wouldn't be affected (I recorded the call).

Was this a letter they sent you? My parents are on SOL 14 and they haven't yet had a price increase (been with them for about 11 months now) so are expecting one soon!
  • Yes, received it this morning. Note that the gas standing charge has gone down, but everything else has gone up.

SOL 18 is not cheaper than WEB 14 for elec standing charge - but everything else is much cheaper, so I'd be surprised if overall it wasn't cheaper for everybody.

Just got a letter from nPower saying that my Sign Online 14 tariff would match the standard one ("because of the requirements of our supply licence"). Eh? Why would the regulator force them to hike the price 30% after a while?

I've only just switched about 9 months ago, and due to this my monthly direct debit went down from £70 to £40, plus I got 2x £30 cashback from Quidco/Moneysupermarket for switching (I was with nPower already on their Standard tariff, but switched to SOL14 and got the £60 cashback).

So, I'm thinking of doing another online switch, getting another load of cashback, and going over to SOL18. Anyone tried this?

Does the letter give the effective date of the increase?

I've spoken again to my parents and got them to check their bills. Only three more days before they are eligible for the £100 discount. Will get npower to generate a bill showing the £100 and then shop around for another supplier.
  • AS long as you stay with npower for the 12 direct debit payments that qualify you for the £100 you won't loose it.

I asked the same question the other day about switching to SOL18 (I'm currently on SOL17 which as a tie in fee) and was told that as i'm changing from an online tariff to another online tariff no fee will be charged.

Give them a call with your current reads (so the price change is charged correctly) and they will do it for you instantly.

Be careful - although my situation might be slightly different. We've been with Npower for several years, and recently switched from SOL13 to SOL17. The day after we requested this change they launched SOL18. Within a couple of days we rang and enquired about having that amended so that we would instead go onto SOL18. I was advised that we would still need to pay the £40 fees (£20 per utility).

this situation has recently been reveiwed and the decision has been made not to charge, or so the CSA advised.

I will certainly be keeping an eye on it though

Really? My gas standing charge has gone through the roof! I was on SOL14 IGT with a 20p per day standing charge- now they want 70p per day!!!! Admittedly the price/ kwh has gone down but it'll leave me £175 per year worse off!!!

The electricity SC has dropped dramatically, but with a small price increase.

I need to do the sums and see how the grand picture balances out but I think I'm going to be worse off.

Can't believe this, it's daylight robbery!
