Halifax All in One credit card

Hi Guys,

Last night I applied for a Tesco Clubcard credit card but was declined. I need to call them today to find out why as I've never been refused credit before (ie. Currys buy now pay later) etc. Aged 20, full time job, steady monthly income, no store cards or credit cards. Just 2 'buy now pay next year' with Currys, overdraft and loan which are all paid on time every month.

I'm looking to use the credit card to pay for my holiday which I have some money saved for already and will pay the rest off within 3 months. The halifax card interests me as it has the 0% interest for 9 months which would be plenty of time for me to pay it of before the interest gets applied!

I've registered with Credit Expert just to double check my credit rating but last time I looked it was fine!

Does anyone know if the Halifax card would be suitable for the above needs, also is the criteria really really strict?

Thanks in advance,
Keeley :) xo

You might be getting declined because although you've had credit - you've not had a credit or store card yet.

The Halifax criteria doesn't say very much, just aged over 18, UK resident and have a regular income (http://www.credit-card-comparison-on.../halifax/all-in-one.asp).

Who do you bank with? You may have more luck asking your bank as they'll have more of a record of how well you've managed your overdraft.

The Halifax All in One - or any 0% purchase credit card - would indeed allow you to pay for your holiday and then spread the cost - interest free - over the 0% period. Just remember you'll still need to make at least the minimum monthly payment each month to keep the 0% rate.
  • Hi Dylan,

Thanks so much for your reply!

I bank with Natwest but they don;t really have any 0% ones that are appealing for what I need it for!

I will be making a minimum of £200 a month to clear the debt as quickly as possible. Then the card will be locked away so I'm not tempted!

Thanks again, cleared that up for me :)

  • Sorry to be a pain, clicked the link you attached.

'he Halifax All in One credit card keeps on offering value for money with it's up to 59 days interest free period on purchases, which is the longest term available, and there is no annual fee.'

59 days? I thought it was interest free for 9 months? Confused.com!

They mean 59 days once the 9 months is up. Perhaps they could have worded it better, although that would go against standard practice!

  • Ah I see! Thanks :)

Well I applied, called today to check up on it. Once again, rejected??! I'm really unsure as to why so I tried the Barclaycard quick application where it tells you if you would be accepted. It said no. So I read through the guidelines.

I have just recently moved so I'm on the electoral register at my old address.
I've been applying for the cards through my new address, but haven't had an forms to register me on the electoral register at this address...
    "
Get yourself on the electoral register

It’s the first thing that any institution checks – that you’re registered at the address on your application."

Could I have found the reason as to why I'm being rejected???!

You do need to get yourself on the electoral register asap. You also need to stop applying for anything else until you have checked your credit files with all 3 CRA's.

It could be you are being rejected because you already have credit outstanding. This may make card companies think you are over commited. I know you said the payments are managable etc; but the lending criteria has been tightened since the recession hit:(

Check your credit files and if everything looks ok with them, then I would suggest your Bank is your best option.

But Please dont apply for anything else until you have checked your files, as this will make rejection more likeley as too many searches in a short period makes you look depserate and struggling.

  • Ah OK. I have a monthly direct debit set up for my loan which I've never missed a payment for in over a year and a half. The other credit amounts up to about £900 but have used them before and paid off in full well before the year was up.

I have filled out the forms to get myself registered at my new address and delete me from my old one. Does anyone know roughly how long this takes?

I won't apply for anything else just yet, any idea how long I should wait? I ideally wanted to book my holiday this week - BOO!

Moving house is such a pain in the bum!! I really don't know what else it might be, other than like you said, they think I'm over committed already. I bank with Natwest and know I would probably have a better chance with them as they have access to my current account and can see my savings etc (thats also who my loan is with) but they dont have any 0% purchase cards :(

I'm not sure where you're getting your information from but there's two listed on your bank's website here...

    http://www.natwest.com/personal/credit-cards.ashx

Having 3 months (Platinum) and 6 months (World Mastercard) 0% on purchases, both would seem to fit with your "pay the rest off within 3 months" plan.
  • Oh yer! So there is :) thanks!!

Well I got accepted for the Halifax All in One card ATLAST!

It was because of my address because we own our old house but don't live there..
So all my credit files are against that house.

Finally sorted! Thanks for all your help x
