Oh for goodness sake, it would only take a phone call!

How about asking the police to trace the owners via the car registration number?

You can get these details from the DVLA - but is it likely its registered to the same name and house as the land registery have given you?

How many "it would only take a phone call" situations do you think they field each week? Wasting police time is wasting police time, this is not within their remit and the police are bound by data protection.

Lots of companies get phone calls that arent necessary but if you have a question then they might be able to advise the best course of action. Asking the question is not wasting their time.

Lots of companies aren't publicly funded, and lots of companies don't investigate crimes.

One phone call, even if within their remit, and not protected by data protection (which I suspect it would be), will then take several minutes searching in a database etc. And it all adds up.

It is a waste of police time, since it's nothing to do with them.

Police are there to prevent and solve CRIME, anything outside that remit is TIMEWASTING. Using the police rather than Google is lazy and selfish.

Yes it says Barclays were the lenders.

What would the crown do with the house then if was the case?

Well it sounds as if Barclays have a secured debt but have failed to enforce it. If it is more than 12 years since the last payment, they would struggle to enforce it in court now.

It may also be that the house was abandoned in the late eighties mortgage crash when loads of folks "gave back their keys". Or that the couple split and neither could afford to pay the mortgage. Interest rates were running at 15% at one stage.

If the property goes to the Crown, then it will be put up for auction. I had to sell a few like this back in my EA days although admittedly there werent many. Most people have someone to leave something too, even if it is a distant relative!

Have a word with your local council I think most of them have an 'Empty Homes Officer'. They may be aware of the situation already and may be in contact with the owners trying to get them to fix it up. I think the EHO can also force the owners to sell if they aren't oing anything with the empty property.

EDIT: Had to Google Empty Homes Agency just to make sure I wasn't making all the above up! I came across the following website which may be handy for you http://reportemptyhomes.com/

this post makes the most sense in this situation. you ring up the council, ask if the property is on their empty homes register, if not ask why not and tell them the situation. if it is they might give you info on why it has been left to sit empty.
