i-tunes and online theft

Hi - just wondering if anyone had had a similar experience and what did they do?
Have an account with i-tunes but have not bought anything from there for over a year, due to amazon MPs downloads being 25% cheaper.
Last week suddenly received a load of email receipts from i-tunes detailing purchases made in dollars, from china.
Realised that somehow someone had used my account to purchases various goods.
Immediately stopped card and contacted i-tunes to say security had been breached and please close account. Also sent query asking how someone had done this as is supposed to be secure site.
i-tunes have replied with a load of guff and have said that to investigate they have to remove any pending transactions on the account. The person who had hacked into my account had tried to purchase more things post my card being stopped. So these purchases haven't gone through. I-tunes are saying that they cannot investigate until I have paid for these further unauthorised purchases. They say I have to pay, and then they will refund.
This seems pretty strange to me.
Anyone else had this?
