Farrow & Ball interior wood paint? No more oil based!? And colour for fireplace??

I was intending to use this to paint my pine fireplace, I picked up an oil eggshell reduced in Homebase last night. I wanted to get the F & B interior oil primer and undercoat, but cant get it anywhere. It turns out that the oil based stuff has been discontinued because of legislation, and thats why the oil eggshell was reduced.

So my questions are:

Can I put the oil eggshell over the water based primer?
If not, should I return oil eggshell and get water based eggshell, or get oil based in a different brand?

It is for a pine fireplace that will be lightly sanded, but not totally as there is too much detail on it.

What are the best products for this? Was also looking at the Dulux difficult area primer but it is also water based.

Have a Johnstones oil based primer, would this be ok for under the F & B oil eggshell.

Other question is when I need to repaint in few years time and can only get water based, am I better to use water based now??

Hope someone can help, took me so long to decide to paint the fireplace and now i cant get what i wanted!

    Hi there.

I can't tell definitely but pretty sure the oil eggshell over water based primer/undercoat will be fine.

We used WB eggshell (aged white crown period) on our pine fireplace over the 2 coats of primer undercoat and have had a working log fire all winter and it still looks as good as it did in Dec. See below :)

Obviously if knots use 'knotting' on them :)

Here is the reply from Farrow & Ball:

Farrow & Ball stopped manufacturing the oil based products with effect of 31st December 2009. The water based interior wood primer is specifically formulated to work with water based Estate Eggshell, therefore we would not recommend inter mixing products.

If you are painting onto bare wood, dilute the Oil Eggshell with 20% white spirit and that will take up any porosity rather than applying another product.

So I need to decide whether to use a non F & B oil based Primer and the F &B Oil Eggshell. Also, as it is discontinued, I can only get one 750ml tin of the eggshell in Dimity. Would this be enough for a fireplace (minimum 2 coats).

Or should I just leave all back and buy from the current water based range? Everything I read suggests to go with oil based.

Also, with regard the colour, I think there was Dimity, Pointing, Lime White, Slipper Satin - which of these is best for a fireplace, want a creamy off white colour.

Yes, that would be more than enough for 2 coats of your fireplace.

Go ahead with the oil and non-oil IMO. good luck, let us know of your results :)
