British Gas Blip!

Options
Just wanted to let you all know what happened to me today.
Was checking my current account against my Microsoft money today (like any good money saver should) when i realsied that BG had taken £48 DD out of my account when my normal monthly payment is £28. Gave them a ring and waited god knows how long to speak to a human-being, to be told that they have a knew computer system and it has taken the wrong amounts out of MOST customers accounts. We were lucky, only £20 difference (still a take-away for us though), some customers had as much as £150 difference. that could be enough to send some people into their overdraft without realising!!
So everyone check and give BG a ring so they can refund you, i can't imagine they'll do it unless you ring them.
I know gas prices had gone up but £20 a month extra is a little on the steep side!
Oh, she also said that it would have stayed st £48 every month until someone had noticed as they have no way of tracking old payments, but that seemed a little strange.
Hope this helps.
And yes i will be shopping around for cheaper fuel bills as soon as Mr Money Saving Expert tells me to.

Sorry it was a long one.

:D

There is nothing about this on the BG website( https://www.house.co.uk )

I have 4 accounts with BG and all are OK.

Alternatively, go to your bank and quote the direct debit guarantee and demand the bank calls the direct debit back. This is a BG problem, let them sort it out. Running up phone bills and getting stressed with BG muppets is pointless.
Note. You will still have to make your usual payment at some point.

  • happened to me today. BG took £104
Phoned and after a 20min stressfull conversation which got me nowhere I'm left to get my 4 kids ready to catch the bus to get to my branch to claim on the direct debit guarantee as my local branch is a howards thingy and Ive got to go to a 'proper' branch
The lady refused that they'd got anything wrong. They've got my bills wrong since I've been with them and I can't change untill its rectified as they think I'm in debit, which I disagree :(
I'm going to write to complain, it's not fair having to drag 4 kids on a bus to sort out BG mistakes, I'm fuming
Thanks saucysarah, I would never have even looked if it hadn't been for your post :T

I am not sure what mistake the computer is making.

If it is taking more than the notified Direct Debit sum from your bank it is clearly in breach of the Direct Debit regulations. BG don't have to get you to agree any revised DD sum but you must be notified in advance when it changes.

A more normal scenario is for 'the computer' to wrongly calculate a revised DD payment. This is notified to the customer, but it is in small print at the bottom of a complicated bill and very easy to miss. If that happens it needs to be taken up with BG.
