iPhone Jailbreaking 3.1.3 Confused - HELP

I'm wanting to upgrade my iphone 3gs to version 3.1.3 as its currently on version 3.0 because majority of the apps will only work on 3.1 etc..
I've checked my iboot which is showing 359.3 the modem firmware is 04.26.08.
Am not too bothered about unlocking the phone as am on o2 anyway. Can I safely upgrade and then use snowbreeze to jailbreak? Will it be tethered or untethered?
Also I saw on a video on utube about someone saying save the shsh file on cydia before upgrading how do I do this?
Please HELP totally confused.

snowbreeze should be fine BUT 3.1.2 and above will be untethere, the hack to tether it is quite complex..
but you don't need to jailbreak it to untether it,Press any other key to continue.0
