We complete next week what do we do with

Hi, well we finally complete next week, we will move out a few hours before our buyer gets here. What do we do with the keys, do we take all of them to estate agent or do we just take the main one and leave the rest in the house. Many Thanks

  • The most common one is to provide the main key to the house with the agent. Some people use their solicitors (1st is easy for both though). The rest of the keys put in a kitchen drawer but make sure the agent knows this as nothing worse than racing around a house moving in and trying to find where they are. Whatever you do please leave a key with someone not like one lot I bought a house from...went to agent no key...they moved form the south coast to ipswich and forgot.....expensive for them as their solicitor immediately withheld their funds, whilst i called in a locksmith. Couldn't open and had to force it.....cost for repair £1400 for a new door and 4 new locks:mad: Good luck with the move:o

Have you considered discussing this with your agent or solicitor...?

I think the Internet has really negatively affected peoples ability to think for themselves.

Not saying that's necessarily the case here ....

When I completed months ago. I collected the main key from the EA. The sellers left all the other keys in a cupboard in the study with any other instructions that they thought might be useful to me.
  • When I left my last property, a set of front door keys were left with the estate agent (they had them from conducting viewings when I was out).
The rest of the keys (patio door, garage door, back door, window locks etc. etc) were left all labelled up with tags on the kitchen worktop.

I only vacated the property once I had the go ahead from my solicitor, just in case the monies were not transferred or any other hiccups (god forbid!).
Once I had confirmation from my solicitor, I finished sweeping up the lounge, said my goodbyes to the house, left by the front door and shut it behind me :(

Then, I picked up the keys for my new property from the sellers estate agent (once they had been authorised from the sellers solicitor) :T

    ....

They've always had that problem it's just that now they advertise the fact anonymously over the internet!

And Google! Solves so many questions! Number of times I read a post, do a single 10 second google search, find the answer and post the link....!
  • We recently moved and when we got the call from our solicitor that everything had completed, I called our EA who had a front door key anyway for viewings and told him we were leaving all the other keys in the kitchen for our buyer. I called our buyer and told him to call our EA who would meet him at the house to let him in and that the rest of the keys were inthe kitchen. Seemed to work well.

We picked the keys up for our new house from our sellers EA and the seller popped round the day after with extra keys he had found to make sure we had them all as the house had been empty for 5 months and he used to pop in once a week to check the post and the boiler.

    All very amicable!

Oh and once you are in, change all the locks and get new keys!

there was a long thread on the rationale for this a few weeks back.
