usb caddy

Hi,my old 2nd hand laptop has given up,i have removed the hard drive.
if i buy a usb caddy, can i then plug it into my other laptop to retrive some work thats on it?
is it just straight forward?
they seem pretty cheap (usb caddy)

    Yes, it's as easy as that. The working laptop will recognise the drive as an external device, just open up its folders with Windows Explorer

    As long as you know where you've saved your work, it'll be a doddle. Make sure you get the right caddy for your drive (IDE or SATA)

    Does the hard drive have this on or 1 that resembles 1 of these but inverted

    Erm.. last time i checked my old laptop had a 2.5 HDD that doesn't come with a 40pin IDE connection!
    it really depends on the caddy..
    you may have one that takes a 3.5" or a 2.5" (size matters :P)
    the next problem is the drive format.. if you have the old drive formatted as NTFS then you may have permission problems, this is simple to fix (you need to "take ownership")

    i am not sure which caddy i need,details from h/d MK2018GAS HDD2168B
    it measures 2.5"(w) x 4"(L)
    a spec for it one 1 site says 2.5" slimline,interface IDE/EIDE

    looks like its a IDE.

    A quick search suggests that you have a Toshiba 20GB IDE drive so you need a PATA / IDE / EIDE type caddy rather than the newer SATA type.

    just need to take ownership which is simple but may take a while depending on the number of files you have!
