Recently my laptop has been playing up... It's really slow when I am going online, e.g if im coming on here, ebay or facebook it takes a good few minutes just to load, its freezing a good few times a night now for about 5 minutes each time. Could this be a virus?
I have tried reading the virus sticky at the top but its all confusing me. whats a cookie? and a cache? I noticed someone has advised someone to clear these?
I hav also noticed that it looks like there are things in the recycling bin, but once I double click on the icon, its showing as nothing in the recycling bin, I clicked on empty the recycle bin and it came up "Are you sure you want to delete Windows"?
Is this normal?
Also, when hovering over the wee icons on the bottom right hand corner when battery etc is I notice there is something saying
"Spybot-SD Resident 131884 processes blacklisted
283740 known ratings available"
does anyone know what this is? Also, how do I check if I have the protection thing?
Many Thanks

Sounds like a laptop you have been given or acquired then ?
Each question will take ages to sort, and give you hours of training to bring you up to speed.. and time you nor I have, its a long road. There are programs on there running that you don't seem to know haw they got there, and the slowness.. I would restart from a clean install of Windows for a start and take it from there.0 -
No its my OH's but he doesnt have a clue either, so I thought I would ask on here.
Whats a clean install of windows? How do I do that? xx0/2013

Is it only slow online, or slow at everything else too (for example to open a Word document, copy a file etc)?
Who is your ISP? Test your line speed and post the result.

Have you got an up to date antivirus program installed, if so which one?No free lunch, and no free laptop

Before you do a reinstall is there anything you want to keep thats on the laptop eg photos, music, documents etc0

I would keep a backup of all your data (documents, pictures, videos.... etc) that you have created since having the system and then, as the other suggested, perform a clean and fresh install of the operating system as it seems clogged with lots of stuff (if not even infected with malicious software) that are running it slow.
The first question is have you got somewhere to back your data up onto? and the second is have you got the operating system disc or a system recovery disc available?Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -
Personally I would clean it up!
as from a clean install you may need drivers ie graphics card/network etc
as for a clean up
First thing you need to do is
1. get a good anti-virus even on a trial basis and do a full scan,
once that's done,
2. run scan disk (My Computer -> Right click C Drive and select properties, tools tab click check/scan now)
3. go to control panels and uninstall what you don't need,
4. do a disk cleanup (My Computer -> Right click C Drive and select properties, general tab click disk clean up ..wait... tick all click ok)
5. remove un-needed start up items (start->run->msconfig->startup(tab) - untick whats not needed).
6. (you may want to skip this or ask for more details)remove un-needed services. (start->run->msconfig->services(tab) - tick hide non-microsoft services and then untick anything you don't need).
7. defrag your drive (My Computer -> Right click C Drive and select properties, tools tab click defragment now)
at this point your PC could be running smoother
8. clean up registry + defrag registryPress any other key to continue.0 -
Download, install, update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. When completed, if anything is found choose 'Remove Selected'. Once completed, reboot and then run a Full scan.
You can post the log produced here if you wish.
Next, download, install and run CCleaner. Choose 'Run Cleaner'.
Next , see how much space is left on your C drive and let us know.
Once you have done that you can follow MadTechie's advice from 1 - 7.0 -
