commuting cover?

Hi.
Can i just ask a quick question about car insurance.
The situation is :
In the household we have 2 cars , both belong to my husband , both are insured as his , he is the main driver on both , i am the named driver on both .
Its really a case of who-ever gets to which ever car first takes that particular car on that particualar day.....(incase anyone thinks we are "fronting lol ).
So.....my husband lost his job and is now self employed as a taxi driver so obviously he will be driving the same car every day from now on .
I phoned budget insurance to inform them of the change of occupation for my husband and to get ME listed as the main driver on the car thats NOT being usedd as a taxi.......but the difference in premium price was around £120 and the guy from budget told me that i would be better to wait till the policy was due for renewal because then i would have another year claim free driving .
The only problem now is that budget have cancelled the commuting allowance on the policy...they state (and quite rightly so) that as my husband does not have to commute to work in the car then the commuting cover is not required!!! WHAT ABOUT ME ???? (lol)
Is this correct ? Is it the same with ALL insurance providers? Does commuting cover not cover named drivers?
What will i do now lol i'll have to walk it to work !
Any opinions?

Directline cover business use for named drivers. Can't you just tell them to still include commuting as the named driver needs it.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. I had a very similar situation. I rang my insurance company and explained exactly how I used the car (driving between various workplaces) they noted it on my insurance but it didn't cost me any extra. Most of my colleagues didn't have to pay extra either.0

Hi Guys and thanks for the responses.
We casnt tell the insurance company that the commuting cover is still required by the main driver (my husband) because as he's a taxi driver who has a psv'd car for taxi'ing in , logically he doesnt need the commuting cover on the car im refering to (which is our "family" car now) .
Just means that i because im the named driver on the policy im not allowed to use either bloody car to go to work in !!!
Seems stupid but im sure theres a reason WHY insurance companies think named drivers DONT COMMUTE!

Budget are a call center broker not an insurer.
Call them back, talk to someone else and point out that you still require SDP+Commuting as main driver, this should not be a problem for them.
It sounds like it was just a problem for the person you spoke to (give he also said not to bother to change a material fact untill the end of the policy i think we can conclude he didn't know what he was talking about).0 -

Hi Dogbot.
Budget cancelled the commuting section of the insurance because it was my husband who was the main driver of the car and now that hes a TAXI DRIVER (using our OTHER vehicle , not this one) budget say that he (as the main driver) has no use for the commuting cover on the policy...they are correct on this fact of course , im just pee'ved because surely NAMED drivers use cars to commute occasionally too ?

He could have parked the taxi someplace else and commute to it.
Just tell them he needs commuting back on because the named driver needs to commute.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. Hi Silvercar.
This wouldnt have worked.
Budget made it very plain to me that it was the insurance underwriter who insisted that the commuting cover had to be cancelled.
What i actually wanted to do was change the policy around , i wanted to keep both my hysband and myself on the policy but this time with ME as the main driver and my husband as the named driver .
I think this is what confused the agents form budget lol i actually at one point got annoyed with them and informed them it "wasnt rock science"!
have a look at my other thread entitled "avoid budget insurance" tell you what , afetre the experience i have encountered today with budget i will NEVER take out insurance with them again , i also intend to tell the world and its wife just how c**p their customer services really are !

There should be absolutely no reason why commuting cover can't continue on the policy for the named driver. As you're married, it actually makes no difference on the policy who the main driver is and who the policyholder is - shared responsibility and all that between spouses is the reason. Therefore, the insurer should be able to flag the policy so that you are the main driver and your husband the named driver, and include only commuting cover for you. We would certainly be able to do it where I work; and then at renewal transfer the policy into your name. I can't think of any reason why Budget, and the underwriting insurer, couldn't do likewise.0

From an underwriting perspective it actually does make a difference who the main driver is on a policy when a couple are married - take an extreme scenario where one of the couple is say 18 and the other is 30 - they have two cars both insured in one name - underwriters will want to rate the vehicle used by the 18 year old on that person's age and experience, which will incur a higher premium because of the higher risk profile.
On the commuting side I agree and can see no reason at all why this could not be transferred to the lady in question.
Personally I would have a look at your certificate, see which insurance company it is issued by and ring them direct, bypassing budget. Underwriters in my experience are very helpful where they can be.0 -
I don't know why you have it set that your husband is the main driver on both. If you had been the main driver on one and him on the other, you both would have had 3rd party cover to drive any car with the owner's consent.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards.
