Network Adapter help

My first post so please be gentle as I am completely computer illiterate! I tried to access the internet on my laptop this evening and it is coming up with a message saying that I need to "plug a cable into in my network "Local Area Connection" adapter".

The other option was turn on wireless capability which I have done.

My question is not how to sort this as I know you guys would know instantly but I don't feel confident enough to do it so I am planning to take it to someone who can. I would appreciate it though if someone could let me know if this is going to be expensive and if someone could also explain to me what the problem is in simple terms I would be ever so grateful.

Cheers

  • No I am the only laptop in the house not connected! I am using my DS to post this message. I have tried rebooting as well but still get the same message.

Turn on your wireless, is there a small slide switch around the laptop edge that could have been moved ? Have you entered the wireless security key, as the other laptops have ?

Can we go back a stage and ask how you were originally connecting? Since you say you turned the wireless facility on after the problem started, I'm assuming that you were connected by ethernet cable? If so, check that that cable is plugged into both your laptop and your router, because that's what the error message is telling you.
If that's not the problem, then do you have the 'normal' lights on your router-power, internet etc?
Switching on the wireless function onthe laptop will not connect you wirelessly unless the wireless connection has already been set up on the router first.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
