Hi
Since I am working away from Monday to Friday from home for six months (i am renting an apartment). My wife is a full-time mother with Incapacity benefit. Am I entitled to have a discount council tax?

:hello:unless she is recieving high rate DLA then no i dont think you will get a discount. I might be wrong though, best to phone your local taxation office to find out. No harm in asking, they can only say no.life is what you make it, make it fun !0

If it is still your permanent residence (and I am guessing it is), you are not entitled to any reduction.Gone ... or have I?0

The property remians your 'sole or main residence' and you have 'intention to return' therefore it remains your home for council tax purposes.
You will be able to claim a 2nd home discount on the property you live in whilst working away. If the property is required as part of your job contract then you may be able to claim a 50% discount but you need to discuss the exact details with the local authority in that area.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
To get a discount on council tax your wife should be on disability living allowance, but sometimes in order to get a discount you need a room adapted to your wifes needs, like for our son whom gets DLA he also DLA at the high rate and has a sensory room we get a discount because of thisFuzzythinking wrote: »Hi

we had to send in lots of forms and letters to prove that our daughter (who is severely mentally impaired) so that she could be totally exempt from council tax. Our son is a full time student as well. I care for my daughter. We got a 25% reduction after they had crossed off everyone in the household, eg youngest daughter (14, too young for council tax purpose), me a full time carer, son a full time uni student, daughter severely mentally impaired. This just left hubs who works full time. So we got our 25% discount. Every little helps !!:j:j:j:jlife is what you make it, make it fun !0
