What year and engine is it? I'm guessing the idle control valve needs cleaning

I had this problem with my fiesta! I never got to the bottom of it though as it was written off shortly before I could get it fixed although my mechanic thought it was a faulty battery originally, then corroded battery nodes and then an air intake problem.

Oh and if you press the accelerator pedal down when it does it, it will restart without you turning the key again although I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you not to do that as it will damage something :)

  • second that, idle control valve.

not sure where it is, but if you take it off and spray inside with carb cleaner that should fix it.

    what engine?
  • The steering actually locks, or do you mean it just gets a lot more difficult to turn the wheel?

Idle speed control valve, mass airflow meter possibly if fitted (8v endura e, fe engine's have em if i can remember correctly two different types were fitted on them a plastic one or a metal one the meter is situated behind air filter box inline with airpipe to throttle housing will have a wireing plug attched to it) check idle control valve clean out with a brake or clutch cleaner away from the face as it will shoot back once sprayed at the inner side of the valve. also there are two diferent types of idle control valve one with round wireing connector and one with square connector! if you fiesta is the mk4 (1996 N reg onwards)

My gf's Fiesta does exactly the same thing. Usually when she has a cold engine on the way to work. She has had her ICV changed and it still happens :( Very odd!
