Hi everyone i need some help!

I have a joint tenancy with my ex-partner, we both live in the same house, i have 3 children, one from my previous marriage and two with him.
Since 31.03.10 we decided stay as friends because it doen't work as a couple.
He already set up child maintenance to my account, but because i work only 16h a week i don't have too much money.
He says he share rent, council, electricity, water.....because he has the right to stay in the house because is a joint tenancy.
I don't mind at least the kids are happy because he is at home and i feel safe with a man in the house.
I already applied for tax credits mow on my owm, should i apply for housing benefit and council for my share rent? i don't know what to do? can anyone help?
Many thanks
