A frustrating BT issue

Has anybody ever had a situation like ths?, or any ideas on how to progress it?

Until recently our Broadband connection has run consistently and reliably at between 0.75 and 1.0 Mbps (not good I know but we do live in a rural area), but in March the connection stopped synchronising properly.
After seven Engineer visits they managed to get the connection to synchronise but only by reducing the speed to about 0.33 Mbps, and we’ve now been told nothing else can be done.
Clearly something has happened to the line to result in a greater than 50% reduction in service.
The reasons we’ve been given for this reduction are,
  • Our house is a long way from the exchange (although it hasn’t recently moved any further away).
  • The exchange has been upgraded to more sophisticated and modern equipment!!
  • There has been an increase in the number of Broadband Customers between us and the exchange.
