Gym membership cancellation policy. Trading Standards Advice?

it's the huge percentage of members who pay but never attend that are profitable.
This is exactly why gyms do what they do - to rip people off. It is not like a mobile phone contract where you actually get an item that is worth some money hence the reason you sign a minimum contract. With a gym, a minimum contract is pure rip off. Why would it hurt them to let someone leave before 12months or whatever? Only because they will lose out on money for nothing, they have no interest in providing you a decent service.
I have actually found a very nice gym (NOT a chain) and they are very flexible about contract lengths. They agreed to let me sign up for 6 months when I said I may have to move out the area before the 12 months was up.
My advice is find a nice gym that you feel you can trust before you sign ANYTHING.
