combi boiler problem - updated

Just moved into a new home and having problems with the combi boiler. Can't contact the previous owners but the boiler has been there for 18 months so it must be working, just can't work out how!

The boiler (one of two in the house) supplies hot water to the bathroom in the extension. Most of the time the hot water comes on for a few seconds and then goes old, occasionally the hot water comes on and stays on. Any idea what could cause this. It is set to give hot water only at the moment, as its too hot to need the central heating on.

What happens if you turn the flow down slightly? Does the water heat up? If so the boiler might just not be man enough.

I'm no plumber but you may have a dodgy pressure or flow switch inside the boiler

    pressure is about 2 - 2.5.

does turning the flow down, mean not putting the tap on full?

All a bit strange as I can't believe the previous owners built an en-suite then didn't use it for 18 months.

Yup. In our old house if the tap was on full blast the water was barely luke warm, turn it down to 1/2 - 2/3 and it was nice & toastie. If that doesn't do it then i think HugoSP hit the nail on the head.
  • Is this a problem on all hot taps or just the bathroom? The most obvious cause, if it is affecting all hot draw-offs and is not simply too high a flow rate as previously suggested, is a worn diapraghm which is what activates the flow switch, although there may be a problem with what is called the diverter, or it could be a thermistor that is faulty, so it is not sensing the temperature of the water correctly. Some modern boilers have a variation of fault codes that are displayed either by LCD or LED number codes, or a different combination of flashing lights, if you can find the literature for your boiler the flow charts at the back may help you to diagnose the fault before you have to call in expert help.

    no fault lights are flashing.

I've tried turning the tap on in site of the boiler. It seems the boiler just doesn't appear to get the message that a hot tap has been turned on and it needs to fire up!

:( Sounds like time to call in the professionals. Fingers crossed it's just something cheap like the flow switch.
  • It does sound like that, or a thermal sensor which is quite cheap too. Good luck!
