Help re cats !!!!
I get a lot of cats wondering around my back. Most come from the front gate of the house but a few from the back. I would love to be able to leave the door open, but can not as the damn things come in. Any suggestions what I can do prevent the b****y things coming in the house please ? TIA

With the exception of a few plants, catnip being the main one, cats really like it. Cats aren't out to destroy your beloved perennials or garden vegetables. What they really like is the dirt. Most cats think the outdoors is their litter box, and a patch of dirt is an invitation to come do their business. It also makes a great place to play or roll.
If you don't want your neighbor's cats in your garden, you will need to take more drastic measures. Try spraying the intruder with a blast from the hose. Most cats will turn and run although some actually enjoy water, especially on a hot day. For them, you must try other tactics, like planting rue. The blue foliage makes this an attractive garden accent, but cats can't stand the odor and will make a wide berth around the planting. Thorny roses also deter cats. Some gardeners use homemade remedies. Although I can't personally attest to the success of these methods, it won't hurt to try them. Sprinkle your plants with crushed pepper. It will irritate cats and may even produce a few extra pepper plants in the garden. Cayenne is also said to work though you will need to reapply it after every rain. Or try ground-up grapefruit and lemon rinds. Or make a tea of rue, hot pepper liquid, or lemon juice to spray on plants. Commercial products like predator urine and cat (and dog) repellents also are available at many garden centers. Or try to get rid of unwanted cat visitors with devices that use sound, light, and/or water to scare them away. Another possibility is to lay down mats, which have soft upward facing points. It won't hurt you--or the cats--to walk on these, but most cats don't like to step on them.
225g pet repellent crystals. The crystals help to prevent cats and dogs fouling on lawns and other areas of your garden. Poundland yes only £1.00

You could throw a handful of Catnip seeds into your neighbours Garden Job done :rotfl:The solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.0 -
Thanks a lot for your detailed reply, but we dont have plants in our garden it`s all lawn back & front, & they dont foul anywhere. I want to be able to leave my back door open & stop the damn cats coming into the house.0

They don't like vinegar you could put a cup of it by your back door. Alternatively you can buy high pitched motion detectors which can only be heard by animals.
From a garden point of view I have a gravelled garden and found potted rose hip and rose hip cuttings laid out by where they fouled a good deterent.0 -
Just buy a water pistol and fire it at them as soon as you see them in the garden... a few soakings and they won't come back..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

My cats hate oranges, you could cut one up and put it around your door that might help
Or a fly screen, the type that you put up with velcro that should stop them well at least until they suss out how to get in
Why are they coming in ? and what are they doing when they are in your house?
Have you got a bowl of pet food say for your dog hanging around?
Something is attracting them into your house, keep an eye out for the tom cats spraying there scent maybe thats the problem
spraying them with water does work but you need to keep it up to really deter them.0 -
Most Cats hate their own reflection and also hate the noise of tin foil when rustled!
My mum had trouble with a neighbours cat and made a sort of scarecrow figure out of tin foil and it worked!
A neighbour of mine also filled empty bottles of pop with water and laid them in his flower beds and the cats stopped coming in.
SO you could try and think of a reflective method by the entrance and see if that works.DebtFree FEB 2010!Slight blip in 2013 - Debtfree Aug 2014 :j

Thanks everyone. I`ve no idea why the damn things come in. I`ve no other pets or food laying around in the kitchen. There are a few of the tips I`m going to try, but to try the water one would mean sitting in the kitchen all day ready & waiting lol.0
