Tesco alters use of codes !!!

From the Sunday Express 6th August 2006 by Andrew Bryson

I have typed this word for word as it appeared in the Sunday Express

"Tesco has been forced to alter its online shopping website after a scam involving money-off codes

The supermarket giant acted after discovering shoppers were typing in Clubcard voucher codes found elsewhere on the internet to gain discounts.

The vouchers are meant to be used only once by customers and are not transferable. Some of the codes posted online are worth up to £15 off online shopping, or 1000 Clubcard points.

Important 2 paragraphs
As a result, the retailer had been losing out by giving multiple discounts. Voucher codes now work only for the users to whom they are issued.

"Since last week the voucher codes that were in circulation are no longer valid" said a Tesco spokesman. "We are aware of these discount websites and if there is any fraudulent activity against Tesco.com or any other retailer: we condemn it."

Tesco said it was hard to stop people misusing the system. "The problem will probably go away for us and come back for someone else" the spokesman said.

Twelve million people in the UK have signed up for a Tesco Clubcard, Rewards such as vouchers are typically worth up to 1 percent of the amount spent.

I suppose it had to happen sometime but is a real shame. Think I will just shop in store now unless they send me a code I can use but sounds these will be few and far apart.
  • I had a wine voucher for £10 from their wine club. Although I had never ordered wine from Tesco before I understood from other people you could use it in conjunction with other offers. Their website is even set up to accept multiple codes. I was also sent via e-mail from Tesco a voucher for £5/free delivery on any wine I ordered up until Sunday.
As both these codes were sent directly to me by Tesco I was very surprised to find I couldn't use both of them. They no longer allow multiple online vouchers to be used if both codes begin xx. Not sure how long this rule has been in existence.

    That's an interesting comment !!!!

Taken to the letter this means 1 of 2 things.

The acceptance of manufacturers' coupons in store for items that are not purchased WILL HAVE TO STOP !

    OR

The store can accept coupons for products not purchased but all that Tesco can do with them is THROW THEM IN THE BIN !

Sending them in to recover the face value of the coupon if the product has not been bought as per the T&Cs constitutes FRAUD and it says so on 99% of vouchers !

There are 10 types of people in the world. ‹(•¿•)›
‹(•¿•)› Those that understand binary and those that do not!

Doesn't stop them making squillions in profit and being the UK's number one supermarket though.

Thanks for letting us know about this.
I can only assume Tesco will find they are losing out by doing this as customers will just go elsewhere.
I find the online shopping a great help as I dont have my own transport and its hellish trying to get back from the supermarket with bags upon bags of stuff and the tesco codes also helped a little bit towards the cost of a few extra bits and the deliver. I'll stick to one bulk online shop per month from now and shop in my local town for the rest rather than a weekly online shop.

For those of you who already have codes- why not call up and ask why your codes are no longer valid? and ask them for another, if they refuse its their loss!
  • I emailed and they said that multiple xx codes were no longer valid. Only one xx code per order. I've just e-mailed back to say - was this always the case? I'm pretty certain it wasn't. I'm waiting to hear back before I reorder just in they show some sympathy i.e give me another free delivery code (old one has expired now) and let me use my £10 off one at the same. Don't think I'm holding out much hope but you never know unless you try.

I've never been able to get a code to work off this site or any other anyway.

  • So i guess that means no more £5 off a £50 shop?

If the codes not taken off the shopping, then the poor driver will have to take it all back, and someone will then have to Unshop and put it all back on the shelves.

    Just a thought ...

What if when we get some codes from Tesco, we compare the codes on here? For example, I could get a 1000 points code and so could someone else ... is the code the same therefore everyone can use it, or if they are all different, then we know they are specific to that person.

    What do you think?
