I thought these get wiped off once a crab person reaches 50??

Sorry ... definitely 65 ... though it would be 50 if you'd taken out the loan 25 years ago and still weren't earning £15,000!
    Gone ... or have I?

    Well crabs retire at 50 :T :D

Sorry, I thought there for a reason that 50 was the retirement age... if only :o

I left uni in June 2002 which meant effectively I should have started paying it off by March 2003. I wasn't earning enough at first but I've been earning over £20,000 since September 2003 and they haven't deducted a penny. I can't understand why unless they've got my tax mixed up.
Luckily I didn't take a huge loan out.

If you started your course before a certain date (1998? 1999?) the student loans scheme was different - deductions are not made from pay but by direct debit from your current account. People earning less than 85% of the average salary can apply to defer repayments.
  • If you move away - to the channel islands for example - they can't deduct anything from your salary as they can't 'see it' :o)
