Application date deadline 2010/11?

Hi all,

My daughter is starting a uni course in Sept 2010. She is lucky enough to be on a course where the tuition fees are covered by the NHS. She is also eligible for an NHS Student Bursary.

I was looking over the Student Maintenance Loan application and it seems that you have to have applied for the NHS Bursary before completing the loan application.

I have heard that unless you get your Student Loan application in before May 31st it won't get paid on time and you may have to wait "several months" before it is paid. This leaves us very little time if we have to have the bursary application in beforehand.

Can anyone clarify the truth about application deadlines and potential delays in payment of the loan? Also any other details about the NHS Bursary application would help.

Many thanks,

timbo1234

If she's going to be applying for income assessed student finance then the deadline to ensure the payments aren't late is the 25th June
though obviously the sooner it gets done the better. Has she applied for the NHS bursary yet?

Thanks for the info. We haven't applied yet, we're doing that this week(end). NHS Bursary website playing up a lot at the moment, can't get on it at all today: http://www.nhsstudentgrants.co.uk/

You don't need to have applied for the NHS bursary first, as long as your daughter knows whether she will be getting an income-assessed or a non-income assessed bursary, she can complete the loan application. The NHS website lists which courses get which bursary if she is unsure.

(and if she was getting the non-income assessed bursary, she wouldn't be entitled to a loan anyway)

    Thanks all,

I've spoken to NHS Bursary's and the university themselves.

The general advice was that no matter what the household income you should apply for the bursary because, even if the award is £0 my daughter would probably be eligible for help with travel expenses related to her placement.

Worryingly, the NHS Bursary line also told me that we had to apply for a bursary because the course fees may not be paid if we don't. This is wrong. The fees are covered by the health authority and applying for a bursary has no impact on that payment.

my son has received a letter to claim his NHS bursary ( he's going to be a 2nd year in September) and they have requested that the completed form and evidence are with them by May 13th 2011
